A less beautiful Swiss book on «The Most Beautiful Swiss Books»?
It seems Rick Poynor, columnist for the Eye magazine, lately got his hands on «The Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2007» which was published by Verlag Hermann Schmidt Mainz within the context of the annual competition tendered by the Federal Office of Culture Switzerland. A recent article in the Eye blog references a detailed review of Poynor which was published in Eye 70. Let's say: he wasn't too delighted with it.Because I don't own the TMBSB book, yet, I can't really take a stand on it and its – as Poynor describes it –
… insipid typography, the randomly scattered ‘quirky’ photos, the unattractive cloth tape wrapped around the spine …If I think of my rambles into the blogosphere, there is no doubt that the Swiss style in typography still enjoys great popularity. But now the Swiss of all people have failed to design a book about Swiss book design? As a formerly student of the Basel School of Design – one of the roots of Swiss Typography – and now of the Academy of Art and Design in Basel my first reaction – of course ;) – is to be sceptical. But Poynor says:
The layout certainly looks ‘Swiss’, but in the coldest, most technical and least prepossessing way.And now that I have had a look at the shown pictures I have to admit, that neither the typographic concept nor the way of dealing with the images of the distinguished books are satisfying me. (via Eye blog)
But my personal impressions are only based on the few and very small images on the Eye blog. So I'm not really able to form an own and justifiable opinion. All the more I wonder if someone else already owns the book and is willing to share more impressions of it?
